Besset Satire Premieres at Lyric Hammersmith

Date: 5 May 1998

Jean-Marie Besset s new satire will make its British premiere at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith this July. In a specially commissioned translation by Jeremy Sams, You Get and What You Expect will run for a limited five week run from 10 July to 8 August (with previews from 8 July).

The play, which has won praise in Besset's native France, paints a portrait of a generation bent on success. Two architects in competition with one another are waiting for a judgment on their proposals for the first monument to be built on the moon. Philip Derrien, an idealist, and Robert Lebret, a well-seasoned realist, must endure the complex waiting game of the artist who relies on the state to create his work.

Thierry Harcourt, who has most recently been working as assistant director on the national tour of Pam Gem s Marlene, directs. The cast features UK soap stars Dominic Taylor (from EastEnders) and Eva Pope (from Coronation Street).

Besset received the Best New Play Award from the French Association of Theatre Critics for What You Get and What You Expect.
