27th Waterways Tour Launched Saturday
Date: 10 June 1998
The Mikron Theatre Company sets sail on its 27th annual National Waterways Tour this Saturday, taking two productions through 1,000 miles of England's canals and rivers. Touring until Sunday, 6 September 1998, the Mikron will hit more than 60 venues that many other theatre companies never reach. Predominantly pubs on or near the waterside, venues for Waterways Tour performances have also traditionally included locations as diverse as sailing clubs, museums, village halls, festivals, private gardens and even abbey ruins.
The Mikron's programme this year features a revival of last year's If You Go Down to the Woods...Tales from the Newbury By-pass and a revised version of Imogen's War, first seen in 1992. If You Go Down to the Woods, by Mike Lucas and Rodney Matthew, tells the tale of the ‘third battle of Newbury where in 1996 hundreds of environmental protestors took to the trees to stop the building of the by-pass. Imogen's War, by Lucas and Sarah Parks, is also based on a true story. It explores the lives of the women who worked canal boats during World War II.
As usual, the Mikron will be travelling on Tyseley, the Company's 62-year-old narrowboat. The Company includes Richard Povall (now in his sixth year), Vashti Maclachlan (in her fourth), and newcomers Charley Moon and Elizabeth Eves.
