Internationally renowned conductor Sir Georg Solti died last night while on holiday in France. He was 84. During his tenure as music director of the Royal Opera House in the 1960s, he took the company to worldwide recognition. His long career also included 22 years with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and four years with the London Philharmonic. Solti was due to conduct Verdi's Requiem this Friday at the Proms, in honour of Diana, Princess of Wales.
