Closure Set for Amadeus, Prisoner & Gin Game
Date: 20 May 1999

As new productions continue to flood into the West End, three recent comers, all revivals, have recently announced early closings.

Sir Peter Hall's production of Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the Old Vic, which had been booking to 25 September 1999, announced this week that it would now finish on 5 June. The revival opened last October starring David Suchet as 'Salieri' and Micheal Sheen as 'Mozart'. A new cast took over last month, with Nicholas Le Prevost and Jake Broder in the roles. The production, with Suchet, is expected to transfer to Broadway in the autumn.

Meanwhile, the production of Neil Simon's 1971 comedy The Prisoner of Second Avenue, featuring American film stars Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason in their West End debuts, has announced that it will close two weeks early. The production, which opened 30 March 1999, had been booking to 17 July. It will now close on 3 July.

The revival of D L Coburn's 1978 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama The Gin Game will also finish two weeks early, closing this Saturday, 22 May. The production, which opened at the Savoy Theatre on 31 March 1999, is directed by Frith Banbury and stars Joss Ackland and Dorothy Tutin.

And finally, the musical Doctor Dolittle - not a revival - has again revised its closure date. In recent weeks, the date has bounced about from 28 August to 5 June. Now producers have pushed it back by three weeks to 28 June. The production, starring Philip Schofield, has been playing at the 3,500-seat Apollo Hammersmith since 14 July 1998.
