Plymouth Premieres Wilson's Moonshine
Date: 17 September 1999

Snoo Wilson's latest play, Moonshine, opens at the fringe Hampstead Theatre next month, following its premiere at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. It runs at the Theatre Royal 30 September to 16 October and opens at the Hampstead on 22 October (previews from 20 October) where it continues until 13 November.

In Moonshine, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - the author, spiritualist and creator of Sherlock Holmes - is in search of homegrown fairies in the English village of Cottingley. Unexpectedly catapulted into an alternative world, he embarks on a fantastic journey with Abraxas 365, the god of gods, in pursuit of malevolent media magnate Moloch and his raving teenage daughters. Their mission: to save the world from imminent destruction.

Snoo Wilson's prolific theatre output includes Vampire, Pignight, The Number of the Beast, More Light, Darwin's Flood and, most recently, Sabina, which ran last year at the Bush, and HRH, which ran in the West End at the Playhouse in 1997. Wilson is also the author of many films, librettos, radio plays and the novel, I, Crowley.

Conan Doyle is played by Robin Soans whose recent theatre credits include Hamlet at the Young Vic and The Invention of Love at the National. He is joined in the cast by Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Lisa Ellis, Ian Gelder, Pui Fan Lee and Peter Jonfield.

Moonshine is directed by Simon Stokes, a former artistic director at the Bush who has also directed Wilson's More Light and Darwin's Flood there. In the West End, he has directed When I Was a Girl I Used to Scream and Shout and A Slip of the Tongue. Stokes is currently artistic director at the Theatre Royal Plymouth which, with the Hampstead Theatre, has co-produced Moonshine.
