Renewed Inquiry Threat for ROH Date: 19 February 1998
Gerald Kaufman, chairman of the House of Commons' Culture Select Committee, warned the Royal Opera House that it could face a new inquiry if it did not take swift action on the recommendations in the scathing report published in November 1997. The entire board of the ROH, including chairman Lord Chadlington, resigned following the report which called for their dismissal. To date, however, only three of the ten empty posts have been filled and two of those by members of the original board. Kaufman's warning follows news this week which found that salary levels at the cash-strapped ROH were far higher than at any other major arts institution. In the last financial year, thirty-three people received salaries of between £50,000 and £100,000 with three people earning more than £100,000. At the same time, the ROH racked up a deficit of £12m and made 320 redundances.
