Shake-up at Royal Shakespeare Company Date: 18 March 1998
Four senior officials were dismissed in a major shake-up at the Royal Shakespeare Company, according to this week's edition of The Stage newspaper. London administrator Graham Sykes and manager of The Pit theatre Sally Barling have both been made redundant. Sykes has served with the RSC for more than 20 years, holding senior positions at the Aldwych Theatre, the Barbican and in Stratford. Rumours are that the redundancies are a run-up to structural re-alignment which will see the creation of a new position of overall London manager who will be responsible for all of the RSC's activities in the capital, not just those at the Barbican Centre. In separate developments, London technical manager Andy Scorgie was dismissed following disciplinary proceedings and head of repertoire Colin Chambers also left. The RSC continues to be plagued by financial crisis. Ordinarily in the black, the company ended last year £1.6m in debt. Its expanded touring schedule is believed to be contributing to its losses.
