Woman Tours UK for 10-year Celebration
Date: 10 July 1998

The Woman in Black, now entering its tenth year at the West End's Fortune Theatre, is celebrating with a new 11-stop UK tour which kicks off on 29 September and runs until 12 December 1998. The thriller, adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the 1970s novel by Susan Hill, is one of the most successful plays ever staged in the West End - it has now been seen by more than two million people.

A keen young solicitor is sent to wind up the affairs of a recently deceased woman. He begins to piece together the details of her strange reclusive life, alone in a remote and mysterious house, and soon finds himself under a curse cast by the spectre of a 'woman in black'. Years later, he recounts his experiences to a sceptical young actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise his fears.

Frank Finlay plays the solicitor in the new touring production. He has recently been seen on stage in the UK tour of Laughing on the 23rd Floor, on British television in The Grand and on film in The Three Musketeers and the recently released Stiff Upper Lips. Ian Reddington, who plays the actor, is best known as 'Tricky Dicky' in British soap opera EastEnders. His most recent stage appearance was in the UK tour of Terry Johnson's Dead Funny.

The West End team - including director Robin Herford, designer Michael Holt and lighting designer Kevin Sleep - returns for work behind the scenes.

The tour will visit Woking, Billingham, Lincoln, Cheltenham, Hull, Birmingham, Swansea, High Wycombe, Bath, Brighton and Blackpool.

The Woman in Black opened at the Strand Theatre in the West End on 15 February 1989 before transferring to the Playhouse on 18 April. It moved to Fortune Theatre on 7 June of the same year.
