Kaufman s Gross Indecency Closes 17 April

Perhaps it was a Wilde too far, but Moises Kaufman s New York transfer Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde has posted closing notices just two weeks after its opening night at the Gielgud Theatre. The play, which opened 22 March following previews from 12 March, had been booking until 12 June 1999. It will now close 17 April.

Gross Indecency chronicles the arrest, judgement and sentencing of Oscar Wilde, who spent two years in prison. It weaves together original courtroom transcripts with personal letters, writings by Wilde and his contemporaries and newspaper clippings of the day in a documentary style that left many UK reviewers lukewarm.

The West End production of the play, which received its British premiere at Plymouth's Theatre Royal last September, stars Michael Pennington as the doomed playwright, with support from William Hoyland, Clive Francis, James Aubrey, Nick Waring, Barney Craig, Stephen Noonan, Mason Phillips and Christopher Staines. Gross Indecency is directed by Kaufman and produced in London by Andrew Fell, Leonard Soloway, Chase Mishkin and Steven M Levy in association with the Plymouth Theatre Royal.
