Calls for Censorship at Edinburgh Fringe Date: 11 August 1997
The Edinburgh Festival opened yesterday with renewed calls for censorship of the increasingly risque Edinburgh Fringe. Local protestors gathered over the weekend at the venue of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow from America which includes acts such as a man dangling an iron from his pierced genitalia and a woman blowing fire from her birth canal. Other elements of the Fringe schedule that have provoked outcry include masochism, female sumo wrestling, necrophilia. The simultaneous film festival has been denounced for its selection of a documentary entitled Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist which shows its subject, in close-up, nailing his genitalia to a board.
