Mackintosh Tops Stage's Top 100 Stage Stars

Date: 4 January 1999

Cameron Mackintosh tops the list of the top 100 most significant people in British theatre in The Stage newspaper's annual survey. This is the second time in three years that Mackintosh has been in the top three of The Stage 100. Last year, he was ranked number two but, this year, he ousted current number two, Stoll Moss chief executive Janet Holmes à Court, from the top spot.

'With a relaunched Martin Guerre, transfer of Oklahoma!, tours of Oliver! and Les Miserables and talk of putting on My Fair Lady, Mackintosh continues to spread his risk and roll out high-quality product worldwide,' the paper concludes.

Selection for inclusion in The Stage 100 is based on the individual's assets, the number of people employed, the quality of product produced, risks taken and the overall contribution to the image and future of the theatrical industry. Only the top 20 individuals are ranked with the remainder recognised by category of input.

Producers and directors figured heavily in the top 20 with prominent names including Andrew Lloyd Webber (3), Trevor Nunn (5), Peter Hall (6), Sam Mendes (9), Richard Eyre (12) and Robert Stigwood (14) as well the highly acclaimed Almeida Theatre directorial team of Jonathan Kent and Howard Davies (8). (*See below for a complete list of the top 20.)

Judi Dench (10) was the only actor to make it into the top 20, but others who warranted inclusion in the 100 included Stephen Berkoff, Ralph Fiennes, Nigel Hawthorne, Ian Holm, Ute Lemper, Ian McKellen, Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith and David Suchet. Top 100 playwrights included David Hare (13), Alan Ayckbourn, Jonathan Harvey, Harold Pinter, Mark Ravenhill and Tom Stoppard.
