London's Barbican Theatre relaunched itself yesterday after a £1.9 million refurbishment which includes an upgrading of accoustics, two new orchestra pits and a sprung dance floor. The centre has also announced an innovative new season of international opera, theatre and dance. The Centre, formerly the permanent London residence of the Royal Shakespeare Company, embarked on the changes after the RSC expressed its intention two years ago to shorten its annual capital season to 30 weeks. This is the first year of the shortened RSC season which allows for a 22-week programme of other artistic works. The Royal Opera will christen the new facilities this Saturday, 13 September, with its first performance after the temporary closure of its Covent Garden home.
