Broadway Homage to Fosse Opens 8 Feb 2000
Date: 23 June 1999

Booking has now opened for the Broadway transfer of Fosse, a homage to legendary American theatre choreographer Bob Fosse. Fosse will open at the Prince of Wales theatre on 8 February 2000 (previews from 24 January 2000).

Earlier this month, Fosse won three of New York's prestigious Tony Awards, including the award for Best New Musical. Ann Reinking and Chet Walker recreate Fosse's trademark choreography with songs and numbers from Cabaret, Chicago, Sweet Charity, All That Jazz and other shows.

Born in 1927, Fosse began his career in vaudeville before joining touring dance companies. He made his Broadway debut in 1950 in Dance Me a Song and his choreographic debut four years later with The Pajama Game, which is revived by Simon Callow for a West End run at the Victoria Palace in September. Fosse's use of groups of dancers, often donned in bowler hats and white gloves, performing jerky, rhythmic steps along with slow-motion movements became his signature style. The acclaimed choreographer died in 1987.

Fosse is co-directed by Reinking and Richard Maltby Jr. Fosse's widow and dance partner Gwen Verdon has acted as artistic consultant.

The revue opened at the Broadhurst Theater in New York in January 1999 and embarks on a US national tour in September. At the Prince of Wales, it will replace the revival of West Side Story, which opened at the Prince Edward in October 1998 and transferred to the Prince of Wales in January 1999. West Side Story finishes its run on 8 January 2000. Fosse is currently booking through to 17 June 2000.
