1998 To Be Vintage Year for London Date: 2 January 1998
For 1998, London looks set to have its biggest ever new crop of musicals. Starting with a major revival of Show Boat directed by Hal Prince, opening on 28 April at the Prince Edward, there's Saturday Night Fever taking over from Oliver at the London Palladium (5 May); Tony Award winning Rent (12 May, Shaftesbury); Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind (30 June, Aldwych); and Dr Dolittle (14 July, Labatt's Apollo). And that's not all. A number of other shows are expected in London, though they're still to confirm opening dates and venues. These include: a revival by the National Theatre of Oklahoma!, a London transfer for the current Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's King and I; The Pajama Game, directed by Simon Callow; a London production of Cy Coleman's runyonesque The Life, directed by Michael Blakemore; and musical versions of the Three Musketeers, The Secret Garden, and the feel-good television show set in the 50s, Happy Days.
