Barclays' Award Winners AnnouncedDate: 28 October 1997Winners of the Barclays Theatre Awards 1997, presented by the Theatrical Management Association (TMA), were announced this week. They included Bill Nighy (Best Actor in Skylight), Janet McTeer (Best Actress in A Doll's House, Janet Suzman (Best Director for The Cherry Orchard) and Ben Elton (Best New Play for Popcorn. Two new categories were added this year for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, awarded to Scottish Opera for Idomeneo, and Outstanding Achievement in Dance, awarded to the dancers of Rambert Dance Company for various productions. Two special awards were also given for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre, awarded to Peter Cheeseman in recognition of his 35-year tenure as Director of repertory in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Special Achievement in Regional Theatre, awarded to G & J Productions.
