Arts Council Chief ResignsDate: 2 October 1997Lord Gowrie, chairman of the Arts Council, shocked the arts world yesterday when he announced his resignation, a full year earlier than the termination of his five-year contract. Although Gowrie says he is leaving for purely ‘personal reasons , the announcement comes after ongoing negative publicity. The Arts Council has been plagued by accusations of mismanagement of lottery funds, elitism and, in particular, its handling of Royal Opera House re-development, for which it awarded £78m of lottery money. Gowrie will stay on until next April in order to give the Culture Department time to find a replacement. Related Content |
