Student Drama Debuts at Royal Court Today

Date: 1 July 1998

Drama from London's school students hits the West End this week at the Royal Court Theatre. For one week from Wednesday 1 July, the Royal Court Downstairs (at the Duke of York s) will present a programme of new works from precocious playwrights, aged 11 - 18 years, as part of the theatre's first ever CLASS festival.

Some comic, some serious, all the plays capture the authentic voices of 24 young Londoners who have worked for the past year with teams of professional directors, actors and designers.

The pieces are directed by an assortment of directors including Mark Ravenhill (author of the controversial Shopping and F***ing), Annabelle Comyn, Steve Gilroy, Carl Miller, Mary Peate, Roxana Silbert and Glen Supple. All are designed by Keith Khan, with lighting by Nigel Edwards and sound by Neil Alexander. They are performed by casts of actors and youth theatre members.

The evening perfomances are accompanied by play readings, discussions and other events. The programme includes a special late night performance of Windrush, presented by the Royal Court Young People's Theatre and the BBC. The play, directed by Ollie Ola Animashawun, has been devised by the RCYPT.
