Stomp Pounds Out Another UK Tour
Date: 14 October 1999

Stomp, the multi award-winning international phenomenon which completed its first, sell-out tour of the UK earlier this year, hits the road again in Britain next month. The tour opens 16 November in Wycombe and continues until 11 December to Glasgow, Bath and Birmingham.

Stomp transforms the junk and clutter of urban life into a source of rhythm. In 100 minutes of pure theatricality, the cast of eight performers use boots, bins, garbage, zippo lighters, plumbers' plungers and everything including the kitchen sink to hammer out a symphony.

The show began on the streets of Britain's south coast seaside town of Brighton where its creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas would give free outdoor performances in return for whatever loose change audiences might throw at them. It has since earned them a great deal more than mere change. After the first full production of the evolving show was given at London's fringe Bloomsbury Theatre, it was subsequently seen on the Edinburgh Fringe, and later was seen at London's Royal Court Theatre and Sadler's Wells, before transferring to New York's off-Broadway Orpheum Theatre in February 1994. It returned to London last year when it played a sell-out run at Camden's Roundhouse Theatre.

Stomp has now played to more than seven and a half million people in 31 countries. It is currently in its sixth continuous year in New York and has two companies constantly touring the US. It has won an Olivier award and, in New York, an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for 'Most Unique Theatre Experience'. The company's short film, Brooms, was also nominated for an Academy Award and Stomp Out Loud, their current video, earned a total of four Emmy nominations in the US.
