Mikron Kicks Off 1999 National Waterways Tour
Date: 26 May 1999
The Mikron Theatre Company embarks this week on its 28th annual National Waterways Tour, taking venue-based theatre through 1,000 miles of England's canals and rivers. The 1999 tour kicks off Thursday, 27 May, on the Droitwich Canal and continues until 30 August.
During that time, the Mikron will visit more than 70 venues that many other theatre companies never reach. Predominantly on or near the waterside, venues for the Waterways Tour performances include locations as diverse as pubs, sailing clubs, museums, village halls, private gardens and even abbey ruins.
This year's production is Just in Time by Mikron artistic director Mike Lucas and Jim Woodland, with music and lyrics by Jim Woodland and musical direction by Janet Russell. Following the trail of hitch-hiker Alison, Just in Time tackles the subject of transport, a topical political issue in Britain as roads become more congested and polluted and waterways remain under-used and developed.
As usual, the Mikron will be travelling on Tyseley, the Company's 62-year-old narrowboat. The Company includes Richard Povall (now in his seventh year), Vashti Maclachlan (in her fifth), and newcomer Sophie Russell. The tour is funded by British Waterways.
