Fame Returns for a Fourth West End Run

Fame, the musical that seems to have nine lives, is returning to London once again. The show, which is currently touring regionally, opens at the Victoria Palace Theatre on 3 October 2000, following previews from 28 September.

The transfer to the Victoria Palace marks the show's fourth West End run since it first opened at the Cambridge Theatre in 1995, when it was nominated for two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best New Musical and Best Choreography. It was last seen in the capital in 1998 at the Prince of Wales Theatre and has been touring virtually non-stop ever since. This run will also be the show's second at the Victoria Palace, where it played in 1997.

The Runar Borge production is inspired by Alan Parker's Oscar-winning film and the popular American television series and is written by Jacques Levy and Steven Margoshes. Set in New York's legendary High School for the Performing Arts, Fame follows a group of talented students in their quests for stardom and success as well as in their struggles with romance and other teenaged relationships.

The Victoria Palace has been dark since 22 July when the Spanish musical La Cava finished its run there before transferring to the Piccadilly Theatre, where it re-opens next week. It had been speculated that the West Yorkshire Playhouse production of Singin' in the Rain - like Fame, inspired by a well-known film - would transfer to the Victoria Palace after its recent run at the National Theatre.
