Peggy Lee & Dusty Springfield In New Tributes
Date: 31 December 1999
Two new shows continue the British theatre's seeming obsession with excavating the lives and songbooks of pop legends. The Making of Miss Peggy Lee, currently running at south London's BAC in Battersea to January 16, is described as a new play with music, featuring an on-stage band and live performances of many of Lee's greatest hits, including 'Fever', 'Black Coffee', 'I'm a Woman' and 'Is That All There Is?' Lee is played by the young London-based jazz singer Kate Dimbleby.
Dusty the Musical is a celebration of the sixties pop diva, best known for such songs as 'The Look of Love', 'I Only Want to Be With You' and 'Son of a Preacher Man'. Touring the UK from February 23, prior to an anticipated West End run, this new musical features Mari Wilson, the actress and singer best known for her 80s hits, 'Just What I Always Wanted' and 'Cry Me A River', in the title role. With a book written by Paul Prescott, the show is directed by Bob Tomson, who was responsible for the still-running production of Blood Brothers at the Phoenix Theatre, with choreography by Gillian Gregory, best known for her work on the London and Broadway productions of Me and My Girl. The tour begins at Bromley's Churchill Theatre, before travelling throughout the country to dates including Coventry, Liverpool, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and Aberdeen.
