McCartney Makes Classical Debut Date: 15 October 1997
Sir Paul McCartney, ex-Beatle, made his classical debut last night at the Royal Albert Hall with the premiere of his symphonic poem, Standing Stone, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The Victorian-style piece, commissioned by record company EMI to celebrate its centenary, took four years for McCartney to compose with the help of a creative team. McCartney, who cannot read music, said the trick to composing symphonies is to be completely ignorant of classical music.
