Herman Tribute Transfers to VaudevilleDate: 19 October 1998
Following its successful London premiere earlier this year on the fringe, Paul Gilger's tribute to legendary Broadway composer Jerry Herman is transferring to the West End. The Best of Times: The Showtunes of Jerry Herman will open at the Vaudeville Theatre on 23 November 1998.
The revue showcases the music and lyrics of Herman from record-breaking, Tony Award-winning musicals such as Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles to the lesser known scores of other musicals such as Mack & Mabel, Dear World and The Grand Tour. In total, sixty songs are performed by a cast of six performers who are accompanied by an on-stage piano and four-piece orchestra.
At the Bridewell Theatre, where the show played 6 to 29 August, it was billed as 'a grand tribute to Jerry Herman, an American treasure....His career reminds of the Golden Age of Broadway when pure entertainment was reason enough.'
The American team responsible for bringing the revue to London is headed by Paul Gilger, who conceived the show and worked closely with Jerry Herman in developing it. Bill Starr directs and choreographs with set designs by Bridget Kimak and costume designs by Jackie Galloway.
