Last Night of Proms Marked Tributes Date: 14 September 1997
The Last Night of the Proms concluded yesterday with a touching triple tribute - to Diana, Princess of Wales, Mother Teresa and Sir Georg Solti who have all passed away in the last fortnight. Following resounding encores of Land of Hope and Glory, conductor Andrew Davies urged the audience and millions of TV viewers to embrace their legacy and 'take their spirit with us into the future'.
Sir Georg Solti, still spry when he died last week at 84, had been due to conduct Verdi's Requiem at the Proms last Friday. His death has caused both shock as well as logistical disarray in the orchestral world. He was scheduled to conduct at various events well into the next century and the shortage of world-class conductors, most of whom already have long-term binding commitments, means that his shoes will be doubly hard to fill.
