Maddie Closes After Six WeeksDate: 24 October 1997Britain's newest musical Maddie is to close only six weeks after it opened at the Lyric Theatre in London. Much-hyped beforehand for its home-grown creative team and American starlet Summer Rognlie, the musical was almost universally panned by critics which has resulted in poor ticket sales and losses of around £500,000. Maddie's short run is reminiscent of the West End's last big musical flop Always, the abdication of King Edward set to song. Other recent musicals have also been damned in the newspapers, prompting Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the biggest musical producer, to suggest that critics don't understand the genre. The Royal Shakespeare Company s critically-acclaimed Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Antony Sher and currently on national tour, is rumoured to be the replacement for Maddie at the Lyric.
