New ROH Chairman AppointedDate: 13 January 1998In an unexpected move, Sir Colin Southgate has been nominated as the new chairman of the Royal Opera House. Southgate, chairman of the EMI music group, is credited amongst other things with signing the Spice Girls to subsidiary label Virgin Records. Culture Secretary Chris Smith is said to have approved the appointment after reading about Southgate's formidable crisis management skills. Southgate, 59, succeeds Lord Chadlington who resigned last month along with the rest of the ROH report after a damning report from a Commons Select Committtee. Southgate's charge is to lift the ROH out of its severe financial crisis which has left it nearly £8m in debt and teetering on the brink of insolvency. The Commons Committee is scheduled to reopen its investigation into the management of the ROH later this month. Related Content |
