Cullen's Anna Weiss Closes After One Month

Date: 14 December 1999

Mike Cullen's drama about false memory syndrome, Anna Weiss, has posted early closing notices despite the attraction of British film star Catherine McCormack in the title role. The play, which opened at the Whitehall Theatre on 22 November, following previews from 17 November, was booking until 23 January 2000. It will now close on 18 December 1999, after just one month.

McCormack won international attention when she starred as Mel Gibson's wife in the 1995 film Braveheart. Her film credits since include The Land Girls, Dancing at Lughnasa, The Honest Courtesan (Dangerous Beauty in the US) and This Year's Love.

Anna Weiss was first performed at the Traverse Theatre in 1997's Edinburgh Fringe festival and went on to Boston. The three-hander concerns a psychiatrist, Weiss, who is trying to help a patient recover painful memories of child abuse that may lead to a confrontation with the patient's father. McCormack is joined in the cast by Shirley Henderson and Larry Lamb.

This new production is directed by James Kerr who directed the National's recent production of Rita Dove's full-length verse play, The Darker Face of the Earth. Scottish writer Mike Cullen's other plays include The Cut and The Collection.
