Ragtime Due in West End March 1999 - Maybe
Date: 3 July 1998
The Society of London Theatre, marketing body for West End theatres, announced this week that Broadway musical Ragtime was confirmed to open at the Prince Edward Theatre 9 March 1999 but producers say SOLT has 'jumped the gun'.
Spokeswoman Lynn Kirwin says Livent Productions has only booked a provisional press night for that date. 'It Ragtime is coming next year but that's all we can say at this time,' Kirwin told What's On Stage. 'It is conceivable that it could be at another theatre at another time.' Kirwin says that further details or confirmation will not be possible until later in the year.
Ragtime - directed by Frank Gelati, written by Terrence McNally and based on E.L. Doctorow's classic novel - is currently playing on Broadway where it has won four 1998 Tony Awards. The musical is about immigrant families and their intertwined lives in turn-of-the-century New York, where ragtime music is beating out the rhythm of a new era. Music and lyrics are provided by Stephen Flaherty and Lynne Ahrens, the team behind the Olivier Award-winning Once On This Island.
