Royal Opera Dresses Down for Cosi Fan Tutte Date: 11 March 1998
When the original, modern dress production of Cosi fan tutte ran at the Royal Opera House in 1995, the cast sported costumes designed by Giorgio Armani. How times have changed. The clothes designer won't allow his creations from a by-gone season to be flaunted so publicly and the ROH, can no longer afford to pay £1,000 plus for an Armani suit. Instead, this week, nine of the lead singers in this year's revival production of the opera went on a shopping trip to high street store Marks & Spencer. The result was a much more affordable bill of £1,000 for all nine singers.
