Saturday Night Fever Boogies onto London Stage in World Premiere
Date: 21 October 1997
Twenty years after the release of Saturday Night Fever, the film, comes Saturday Night Fever, the musical, which will see its world premiere at theLondon Palladium on 5 May 1998. And, judging by the reception at today's press conference, for which the falsetto, filial, singing trio the Bee Gees flew in specially, it's going to be the biggest disco hit since John Travolta hung up his dancing shoes. The new, £3.5m stage adaptation is brought by the film's producer Robert Stigwood, co-produced by Paul Nicholas and David Ian, and directed and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. Bee Gee fans will thrill at the release of two new songs written by the brothers, Immortality and First and Last, as well as a few gems that didn't make it into the original movie soundtrack. Stars of the 36-strong cast who were introduced today include two Australians - Adam Garcia (a mere four years old when the film was a hit) as strutting Tony and Anita Louise Combe as Stephanie, his more sophisticated, dancing partner. The two said they d be undergoing intensive language training to master their characters Brooklyn accents. Watch What's On Stage for more in-depth coverage of this major launch as well as news on the future of the hugely successful revival of Lionel Bart s Oliver!, currently residing at the Palladium.
