New Pooh for Polka Children s Theatre

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the publication of the classic children's book, the Wimbledon-based Polka Theatre for Children will be presenting a new adaptation of A.A. Milne's The House at Pooh Corner as its main summer production for 1998.

The production, which runs 11 June to 15 August, will recreate on the stage the world and adventures of Christopher Robin, Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo and Owl, and a Heffalump or two.

An exhibition of the work of E.H. Shephard, Pooh's original illustrator, will run alongside the production. It will feature original drawings, manuscripts and memorabilia of Shepard, including a model of the 100-acre wood. The collection, given by Shepard during his lifetime to Surrey University, is part of the Shepard Archive Appeal which is aiming to raise £50,000 in order to preserve his work for future generations of children.

A family workshop, based on the show and run by Shepard archivists, will offer participating children the chance to create their own book about Christopher Robin and Pooh. It will be held Saturday, 20 June.

UK-based children, between 7-11 years, are also invited to enter a Winnie the Pooh letter-writing competition. The winner will be flown to New York City this summer with their family to visit the original Pooh and his friends. Runners-up will win free tickets to the Polka production of The House at Pooh Corner.
