Lottery Funding for Arts Threatened Date: 26 August 1997
The Arts Council is in negotiations with the Government over alleged plans to cut lottery funding to theatres, galleries and other initiatives which could result in a halving of the current arts budget. Ministers have decided to form a sixth eligible ‘good cause for lottery money, covering education and health, in addition to the arts, sport, charities and the Millenium exhibition. According to the Arts Council, Chris Smith, the Culture, Media and Sport Secretary is planning to freeze arts allocation at £100 million over the next three years. If this happens, major projects such as the dome for the South Bank Centre and a new home for the English National Opera could be affected.
