McShane & Webb Star in Cuckoo's Nest Tour
Date: 18 August 1999

A new touring production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest kicks off next month, starring actor-comedian Mike McShane and Danny Webb. The play opens 14 September at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley and continues to a further twelve theatres throughout the UK until 11 December.

The stage version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Dale Wasserman, was adapted from the original novel by Merry Prankster Ken Kesey and was first performed on Broadway in 1963 starring Kirk Douglas. Milos Forman's film starring Jack Nicholson was released in 1975, winning five Oscars.

Life's not much fun at the State Mental Hospital under the iron rule of Nurse Ratched, but a new patient is about to shake things up. As group therapy gives way to gambling and parties take the place of pills and piety, the formidable nurse heads for a final showdown with the lively newcomer McMurphy, watched over by his silent friend Chief Bromden.

Danny Webb, who recently starred in Art and Popcorn in the West End, plays McMurphy to Mike McShane's Chief Bromden. Canadian McShane is best known for his many appearances on TV's improv comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? and has also appeared on stage in Exact Change (Lyric Hammersmith) and The Pocket Dream (Nottingham Playhouse and the West End). Isla Blair, who plays Nurse Ratched, is best known for TV dramas include The House of Cards and Touch of Frost. Her theatre credits include What the Butler Saw (National) and Tartuffe (UK tour).

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is performed by a cast of sixteen and directed by Joseph Blatchley with designs by Hayden Griffin and lighting by Andy Phillips. The production visits Bromley, High Wycombe, Woking, Nottingham, Canterbury, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Sheffield, Darlington, Norwich, Cardiff and Bath.
