Helen Mirren returns to the stage this October for the first time since 1994 to reprise her role as Cleopatra for a third time. She first played the role in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra at the Old Vic Theatre when she was only 20 and repeated it for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1983. The new production will open at the Royal National Theatre's Olivier venue on 15 October 1998.
Mirren, a renowned classical actress, is best known to television audiences for her character D.I. Tennison in Prime Suspect. In this stage production, she will be joined by Alan Bates as the Roman hero who becomes passionately involved with the ill-fated Queen of Egypt. Bates was seen last year in Simon Gray's Life Support at the Aldwych Theatre. Additional casting for the production is ongoing.
Antony and Cleopatra will be directed by Sean Mathias whose stage credits include Marlene in the West End, and Les Parents Terribles and Sondheim's A Little Night Music for the National.
