Paul Rhys Takes On Hamlet, 19 March

Date: 19 March 1999

Paul Rhys takes on Hamlet today in the Theatre Royal Plymouth/Young Vic co-production of Shakespeare's classic tragedy, directed by Laurence Boswell. Hamlet opens, for ten performances only, in Plymouth before transferring to the Young Vic in London from 1 April to 15 May 1999.

One of the UK's leading young classical actors, Rhys recently played the young A E Housman in the multi award-winning National Theatre production of Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love. He received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as 'Edgar' opposite Ian Holm's monarch in Richard Eyre's production of King Lear, also at the National and filmed for BBC2.

Rhys worked with director Boswell in the 1996 Theatre Royal production of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night at the Young Vic. Boswell's other credits include Ben Elton's Popcorn, both the West End and touring productions, and the RSC's current production of Bartholomew Fair.

Rhys is joined by American actress Megan Dodds as 'Ophelia'. Dodds returns to the UK following her London debut as 'Brooke' in the original West End cast of Popcorn. Other cast members for Hamlet are Suzanne Bertish (Gertrude), Donald Sumpter (Claudius), Christopher Bowen (Laertes), Paul Benzing (Francisco), Todd Boyce (Fortinbras), Richard Lintern (Horatio), Michael Mears (Player King), David Phelan (Guidenstern), Robin Soans (Polonius), Tim Spratt (Reynaldo), Julia Tarnoky (Player Queen), Roger Watkins (Marcellus) and Leo Wringer (Rosencrantz).

Hamlet is designed by Es Devlin with lighting by Adam Silverman and music by Roger White.
