Elton John's Glasses Finds West End HomeDate: 9 May 1998David Farr's new football(soccer)-fuelled comedy Elton John's Glasses has at last settled on a venue for its West End debut. It will open at the Queen's Theatre, vacated early by intergalactic musical Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, on 10 June 1998 - coincidentally(?), the opening day of the World Cup tournament in France. The play, directed by Terry Johnson and starring comedian Brian Conley, first premiered to criticaacclaim last June at Watford's Palace Theatre. The new production returned to the Palace Theatre last month where it kicked off a national tour which will end in the West End. Elton John's Glasses explores one man's obsession with football and, in particular, his team, Watford Football Club (the Hornets), and their failure to win the Cup Final. Conley plays Bill who hasn't recovered from Watford's 1984 defeat by Everton at Wembley. It's now 1996, the fateful day of the last match of the season when relegation looms, and Bill is reliving the agony of the lost cup again. Events take an upward turn with the arrival of Bill's younger brother, members of his rock band and the beautiful Amy who plays a wicked game of football herself. Could there be more to life than just football? Conley, well known for his three TV comedy series, has appeared on the West End in Jolson and Me and My Girl. Farr is the former artistic director of renowned fringe theatre The Gate. Johnson has had several recent hits including Dead Funny and Hysteria. Elton John's Glasses was winner of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Best Regional Play of 1997. Producers warn that the play contains language which is not suitable for children, but very familiar to most football fans. Contact the Queen's box office on +44-171-494-5040 for further information.
