West End Antigone Closes Four Weeks Early

Date: 11 November 1999

Declan Donnellan's production of Sophocles' Antigone has posted early closing notices. The Greek tragedy - which opened to muted reviews at the Old Vic on 11 October, following previews from 1 October, and had been booking to 15 January 2000 - will now close four weeks early on 18 December 1999.

The production stars film actress Tara Fitzgerald in the title role. Fitzgerald's stage credits include the Almeida production of Hamlet with Ralph Fiennes in Hackney, but she is best known for her roles in films such as Hear My Song, Brassed Off and Sirens. She is joined by Jonathan Hyde as King Creon (seen most recently in Hanif Kureishi's Sleep with Me at the National Cottesloe), Anna Calder-Marshall, Zubin Varla and an all-male chorus.

In the classic Greek tragedy, the laws of the gods and the laws of humans are pitted against one another. War has destroyed Antigone's world - her brothers lie dead on the battlefield while Creon her uncle has seized the throne. Alone, she stands against Creon's tyranny, risking her life to bury her allegedly traitorous brother.

Former Cheek by Jowler director Declan Donnellan's recent productions include Much Ado About Nothing, the Russian-version production of The Winter's Tale and Noel Coward's Hay Fever, which starred Geraldine McEwan at the Savoy.
