Benson's Mapp & Lucia Take the Stage, 15 Feb

Date: 6 January 2001

E F Benson's cult series of Mapp and Lucia stories – contained in six novels and two short stories – are to be realised now as a stage musical, opening at London's fringe Jermyn Street Theatre on Feb 15 (previews from Feb 13), for a run to Mar 3.

Simply entitled Mapp and Lucia (as was a television series adaptation of the books as well that starred Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales), this new stage version is written and directed by Peter Benedict, whose directorial credits include a West End production entitled Satyricon that played at the Phoenix Theatre in the early 80s. Original music has been supplied by William Hetherington.

The cast is led by Aimi MacDonald as Lucia and Gaye Brown as Mapp, the feuding females of the title who live in a fictitious rural Sussex village called Tilling. MacDonald starred in the cult 60s comedy At Last the 1948 Show and is also known for her film roles in Take a Girl Like You with Oliver Reed and Vendetta with Roger Moore. Brown has appeared in many West End musicals, including 42nd Street.
