Elgar s Third Symphony Receives Standing OvationDate: 16 February 1998Last night saw the world premiere of Elgar's Third Symphony which has been completed 60 years after his death. The work - commissioned by the BBC, conducted by Andrew Davies and performed by BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall - was resurrected by composer Anthony Payne from 141 pages of notes left by Elgar at his death in 1934. Controversy surrounded the recent commission since Elgar's dying wish was that no one ever be allowed to complete the symphony. But doubts dissipated last night as the concert ended with a standing ovation. The concert will be broadcast tonight on BBC Radio 3. Related Content |
