Arts Council Accused of Giving Too Many Grants Date: 27 August 1997
Following the announcement that lottery funds for the arts may be slashed, the Arts Council has come under fire for being too generous with its grants. Luke FitzHerbert, editor of the National LotteryYear Book, claims that the combined arts councils of Wales, Scotland and England had promised grants totalling £972m, far exceeding the commitments of the other ‘good causes - £688m for sport, £685m for heritage and £505m for charity. The Arts Council maintains that it has kept within the government guidelines for allocating money.
