Gambon, Howard, Bennett, Take Honours Britain's theatre world has a new theatrical knight today: he's Sir Michael Gambon, who was given the honour for services to drama. He was particularly good this year, we thought, in the period political comedy Tom and Clem. Also honoured was Alan Howard, who was awarded the CBE. After a pretty quiet year, Howard bounced back to the London stage with an effect Lear and an acclaimed, Broadway-bound Waiting For Godot. There was a CBE, too, for Peter Cheeseman, director of the New Victoria Theatre, Newcastle-under-Lyme. The world of music was represented by a knighthood for the composer Richard Rodney Bennett. Others named in the List from the performing arts world included: Alan Nicol, for services to community drama in Scotland; Joan Hinnigan, secretary of the Manx Music Festival, for services to the community on the Isle of Man; Angus MacDonald, chairman of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, for services to music; and Huw Williams, director of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, for services to music.
