ROH to Reduce Ticket Prices Following Poor ReturnsDate: 13 October 1997The Royal Opera House s financial position has grown more precarious since closure of its Covent Garden home for a £214m redevelopment this July. The opera and ballet companies, currently performing at the Barbican Theatre and Labatt's Apollo Hammersmith, have not been able to draw in the same crowds at their temporary homes. Although the ballet does seem to be attracting a new audience of dance lovers - including many from ethnic minority groups - it has had to drastically reduce ticket prices to reach a target 65% attendance. The House, already running a £5m deficit, is preparing to further reduce standard ticket prices and popularise its 1998 programme, to be announced next month. Already, some proposed productions have been cancelled. Related Content |
