Royal Opera Begins Life on the Road Date: 13 September 1997
The Royal Opera performs for the first time tonight since the closure of its Covent Garden home in July. The opening performance of the 1997/98 season is Handel's Giulio Cesare at the Barbican Centre. The occasion also marks the opening night of the Barbican following the £1.9m modernisation project which was undertaken to accommodate the Opera's requirements. Labatt's Apollo, host venue to sister company the Royal Ballet, has spent £750,000 adapting its features for the ballet.
