Perfect Days Receives London Premiere, 8 Jan
Date: 9 December 1998
Liz Lochhead's Perfect Days - which had its world premiere in August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it also received a coveted Fringe First Award - will have its London premiere in January. The play opens at the Hampstead Theatre in north London on Friday 8 January 1999 (previews from 6 January) and runs until 30 January.
As she approaches her 39th birthday, Barbs Marshall appears to have it all - a flourishing career as a celebrity hairdresser on TV's Morningtime Makeover, a designer loft apartment in Glasgow's city centre, and a retinue of faithful friends and lovers. None of this compensates, however, for her one aching need - to have a child, with or without a man, at almost any cost.
Siobhan Redmond revives her role as Barbs Marshall, a part written specifically for her by Lochhead. Redmond's other stage credits include Much Ado About Nothing (RSC), An Experienced Women Gives Advice (Manchester Royal Exchange) and The Trick is to Keep Breathing (Royal Court). Her television credits include Between the Lines and The High Life.
Redmond is joined in the cast by Enzo Cilenti, Vincent Friell, John Kazek, Anne Kidd and Ann Scott Jones. The play is directed by John Tiffany with design by Georgia Sion, lighting by Chahine Yavroyan and sound by John Harris.
Liz Lochhead is a Scottish poet, playwright, performer and broadcaster. Her stage plays include Britannia Rules, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, Quelques Fleurs and Blood and Ice as well as adaptations of Moliere's Tartuffe and Bram Stoker's Dracula. She is currently adapting Perfect Days into a screenplay for Channel 4 Films.
Perfect Days is produced by Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, where it premiered. The play follows Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs, starring fellow Scotsman Ewan McGregor, into the Hampstead Theatre. Following its run there, Perfect Days will embark on a five week Scottish tour to Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Dundee.
