Winners Announced for 2000 Regional Awards
Date: 23 October 2000
The winners of the 2000 Barclays Theatre Awards were announced last night at a ceremony, hosted by Ned Sherrin and held at London's Royal Court Theatre. Presented by the Theatrical Management Association, the Barclays Awards are unusual in that, unlike the UK's other awards for theatre, they do not focus on London and the West End. They are in fact the only nationwide awards for excellence in regional theatre.
Coincidentally, two Royal Court productions were award winners - Richard Wilson won the award for Best Director for Mr Kolpert and Jeremy Herbert won Best Designer for Sarah Kane's posthumous 4.48 Psychosis, both presented at the Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Upstairs.
Other winners included Victoria Hamilton (Best Actress for As You Like It), Jonathan Cake (Best Actor for Baby Doll) and Ben Brown's Larkin with Women (Best New Play). London's acclaimed fringe theatre company, the Almeida, whose home venue in Islington is about to undergo a major refurbishment, won the front-of-house award for Theatre of the Year.
Productions at over 160 theatres throughout the UK were eligible for this year's Awards. The judging panel included 100 regular theatregoers from across the country. The 2000 judging year ran from 1 September 1999 to 31 August 2000.
