Williams' Summer Revived at Comedy, 14 Apr

Rachel Weisz and Sheila Gish are to star in a West-End bound revival of Tennessee Williams' 1958 drama Suddenly Last Summer. The play, directed by Sean Mathias and presented by the Donmar's Warehouse Productions, arrives at the Comedy Theatre 14 April (previews from 8 April) following a UK regional tour to Guildford, Bath and Malvern.
Suddenly Last Summer is a study of motherly love, jealousy and guilt. Weisz plays Catherine, a young woman who suffers a breakdown after she witnesses the rape and beating to death of her gay cousin. Gish is the boy's mother, Mrs Venables, who doesn't want to know the truth about her son or his violent death but who wants, nevertheless, to avenge it.
Weisz is best known for her British television and film roles in Land Girls, Stealing Beauty and My Summer With Des. Gish won a 1996 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical for Company, while her television credits include Pie in the Sky, Jonathan Creek and Highlander. Weisz and Gish are joined in the cast by Patricia Boyer, Gerard Butler, Johanna Kirby, Tim Mathews and Julia Swift.
Suddenly Last Summer follows another revival, David Halliwell's Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs, into the Comedy Theatre. Little Malcolm, starring film heart-throb Ewan McGregor, is scheduled to close 13 March 1999.
