West Side Story returns to Sadler's for summer 2013

Date: 13 November 2012

The acclaimed 50th anniversary production of West Side Story is returning to Sadler's Wells next year as part of the venue's spring/summer season.

Also returning next year will be the award-winning Some Like it Hip Hop, dance superstar Carlos Acosta and, as previously announced, works from Pina Bausch, Hofesh Shechter and National Ballet of Canada.

Running from 7 August to 22 September 2013, West Side Story returns to Sadler's following its sell-out run in 2008.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story has a book by Arthur Laurents, score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The classic score features "Maria", "Tonight", "Somewhere", "America" and "I Feel Pretty". Joey McKneely directs, with Donald Chan conducting.

The 50th anniversary revival - directed by Joey McKneely and conducted by Donald Chan - is based on the original direction and choreography of Jerome Robbins from the 1957 Broadway premiere.

Also announced today is the return of ZooNation’s Some Like it Hip Hop, which returns to the Peacock Theatre from 3 May to 30 June 2013.

With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, the show tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre.

Elsewhere, Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta will return to the London Coliseum for five performances only (30 July - 4 August 2013) with Classical Selection, a new show presenting highlights of his career.
