Exhibition For Dance Artist Robert Heindel

Date: 8 September 2009

A commemorative exhibition for the dance artist Robert Heindel (1938-2005) will take place in London this October. Best known for his loosely drawn style depicting dancers in rehearsal, Heindel collaborated with some of the world’s best-known ballet companies, including The Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Scottish Ballet, as well as working with leading dancers and choreographers, including Anthony Dowell, Monica Mason, Gillian Lynn, Darcey Bussell and Irek Mukhamedov.

The Ohio-born Heindel came to public prominence following a hugely successful show at the Royal Festival Hall in 1986. This led to his being invited by Andrew Lloyd Webber to paint The Phantom of the Opera and Cats in the rehearsal stage, followed by Cameron Mackintosh commissioning him to paint scene from Les Miserables. Heindel’s oil canvas of Frederick Ashton is in the permanent collection at The National Portrait Gallery.

The exhibition at the Halcyon Gallery is the most complete collection of Heindel’s work to go on display in the UK to date. It spans 25 years of his career with many of the works not previously seen.
