Late Changes to Carlos Acosta Coliseum Visit

Date: 15 July 2009

As Carlos Acosta prepares for his performances this week with The Royal Ballet in Havana, its first visit and his home town, the Cuban star has announced late changes to the cast and programme of his show at the London Coliseum next week.

Acosta was set to dance a pas de deux from Spartacus with Bolshoi dancer Nina Kaptsova, but she can no longer perform and the duet has been dropped. Acosta danced the full-length ballet at Covent Garden in August 2007 when the Bolshoi last visited London, and went on to film a DVD of the sword-and-sandal epic with Kaptsova in January 2008.

Acosta’s programme now includes 11 short works, mostly recent and little-seen ballets, including Kim Brandstrup’s DK60, Derek Deane’s Summertime, Michel Descombey’s Dying Swan, and Ben Stevenson’s Three Preludes. An excerpt from Frederick Ashton’s Rhapsody is one of the few older works.

As well as Acosta himself, dancers confirmed to appear are Florencia Chinellato and Amilcar Moret from Hamburg Ballet,
Begona Cao and Arionel Vargas from ENB, Roberta Marquez and Steven McRae from The Royal Ballet, Miguel Altunaga and Pieter Symonds from Rambert Dance Company, and Veronica Corveas from Ballet Nacional de Cuba.
