Cast announced for Spring Awakening at the Hope Mill Theatre

Luke Sheppard will direct Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s musical

The cast has been announced for Spring Awakening which opens at the Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester in March.

Directed by Luke Sheppard (In the Heights), the cast will feature Darragh Cowley (professional debut) as Melchior, Adam Dawson (Hair) as Hanschen, Beth Hinton-Lever (Reasons to be Cheerful) as Thea, Teleri Hughes (professional debut) as Ilse, Nikita Johal (Children of Eden) as Wendla, Gillian Kirkpatrick (Sunny Afternoon) as Adult Woman, Luke Latchman (Working) as Ernst, Tim Mahendran (professional debut) as Otto, Seyi Omooba (Ragtime) as Martha, Neil Stewart (Jersey Boys) as Adult Man, Sophia Simoes Da Silva (professional debut) as Anna, Jabez Sykes (The Snow Queen) as Moritz and Christian Tyler Wood (Jersey Boys) as Georg.

Sheppard said: "We made a commitment to seeking out fresh new talent to bring Spring Awakening to life for a new generation… our cast embodies the bright future of musical theatre talent in Britain. It’s a privilege to work with them on this extraordinary piece."

Winner of eight Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards, Spring Awakening follows a group of teenagers in late 19th century Germany, coming to terms with their own sexuality. It is based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 play of the same name and has book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik.

The production will have design by Gabriella Slade, musical direction by Gareth Bretherton, choreography by Tom Jackson Greaves, lighting by Nic Farman, sound by Leigh Davies and casting by Verity Naughton.

Spring Awakening runs at the Hope Mill Theatre from 29 March to 3 May.
